Nice review, V. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm going home this weekend, so maybe I'll convince my mom to go. Although she IS in the camp of admiring strong male influence... Will report back.
I had what I felt was a weird reaction to the movie, where I craved it and was totally glued to it, and also loathed it and wanted to punch it. From reading V's review I get the sense that she didn't have this reaction.
It's so wonderful to see a lesbian family in the movies, as V said.
But...it's like, since I only get to see one lesbian family per three year period on TV or movies (I don't have TV, which may be part of the problem) I get really aggravated when there are flaws in the movie.
I also want to diss on: I am getting sick of watching about rich, mostly white people in southern Cal. Wasn't the sperm doner like, coded as working class but not really working class? What's that about? I feel like that happens a lot. Could we maybe just have some characters who are not rich, as opposed to the "class conflict" being doctor versus restaurant owner over the utility of higher education?
Uh, hurray for lesbian families, but the story of one woman cheating with a man, throwing the relationship into disarray, dates back to The Well of Loneliness in 1928. Although at least this time it looks like they'll stay together (unlike Well of L.)
Annette B.'s character drove me nuts. Both she and Julianne M. (whom I normally adore) did a bad job; they're like cartoon characters. Is this because they're not really lesbians? Maybe! No queer actors for these roles, hmmm?
How is it possible that Julianne M. was in a movie and was not smokin' hot?? Something went very wrong.
I agree with V that it's weird that there's no lesbian sex but there's a ton of X-rated straight sex. This was probably to make the movie appeal to "a wider audience" but it's ridiculous.
In general, the film makers seem to have made choices in order to "appeal to a wider audience" that end up sucking--this is classic in books/movies about queer women--like having one woman sleep with a man and showing all that sex, etc.
