Check out this post on Nelly's blog. While it doesn't justify the headbutt (Zidanne should be cooler that that), it's pretty clear that Materazzi (the guy Zidanne headbutted) wasn't an innocent.
Also, Materazzi totally flopped after the headbutt. It says something that even when egregiously fouled, the Italians feel it's neccesary to embellish.
Of course you don't think he flopped, because he's a good flopper.
But it's simple physics. Materazzi was walking forward. Zidane stepped into him and head-butted him. Materazzi is bigger than Zidane and had forward momentum and yet, Zidane's headbutt sent him flying backwards.
I'm sure it hurt Materazzi a little bit. He's had (but mostly given) worse. But when you have the wind knocked out of you, you crumple to the ground. You don't fall backwards, and your legs don't go flying up. Unless you're in a Chop-Sockey movie or you're flopping.
