But do the merchant marines really have the kind of cash lying around that you're going to need to study deviant 19th century sexuality in a big way? You wouldn't want to try to do this on the cheap. Besides, isn't the merchant marine just a big scam anyway? Aren't they the ones that run those duty-free stores at airports and so on? I don't think any reputable scholar of deviant 19th century sexuality would want to be associated with those rapscallions. Just ask yourself: What would Kinsey do?
It's really true that sailors seem to be kinky, historically. And look at the Village People--isn't one of them a pirate? But the merchant marine? Aren't they the ones that spilled that Texaco oil all over the baby seals?
