The Fan Mile

We went to the Fan Mile last night to watch the U.S. play Italy. The Fan Mile is a mile-long stretch of the main road through the Teirgarten (big park) that they've blocked off and filled with giant TV screens and beer stands. Many people I know have horror of the Fan Mile due to the heavy drinking, machismo, and nationalism that it seems to promote. And they are right. But the Fan Mile also totally rocks! Even though the street was oily with spilled beer, and an obnoxious U.S. fan yelled in our ears the whole game. And what a crazy game! Sorry, Italians.

I can't muster up any sympathy for Italians. Ever. Especially not in this case, since if the ref hadn't started throwing people out left and right the U.S. would have outright won that game. At least this way Italy got a point. And now, after hating Italy for a week, I ironically must love Italy for a week because they must beat the Czechs for the U.S. to advance. Crazy, but that's World Cup Soccer for you!

This Fan Mile sounds super cool. Exactly the kind of thing that you should have for every world cup, but probably don't. Way to go Germans! I salute you.

Well. I guess I stand corrected then. I honestly had no idea. Is this a recent development or has Italy always rocked? Because I've always thought of the place as rather greasy and corrupt. Learn something new every day I guess.
